This is a meme worth doing. i got it from
cristalia and
sosotris2012, but I'm sure lots of people have been doing it.
basically, you track the history of things that you read over the years. what stuck with you and what did you discard, and all that.
Five Authors I Read -- Grade School and Younger
Roald Dahl - but didn't everyone read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory? James and the Giant Peach? Danny, the Champion of the World? I did. I went on with everyone else and read these books.
C.S. Lewis: I read and re-read The Magician's nephew over and over. I watched the animated Lion, Witch, Wardrobe show every christmas. It's what I had.
Andrew Lang: His anthologies of Fairy tales, you know, the orange Fairy book, the green fairy book, etc. I loved fairy tales. They were my favorite.
whoever it was: that wrote all those bobbsey twins books. I read dozens of them.
whoever it was: that wrote the Nancy Drew books. I read dozens of those too.
Tried and dropped: the whoever it wases, and Dahl. and the whoever it was that wrote those trixie belden books. guh.
Tried and kept: Lewis and Lang.
Five Authors I Read -- Grade School/Junior High
I found madelene l'engle at this point, and read the series that I called The Charles Wallace books - I guess you can tell who i liked.
also, Anne mccaffery's dragon stuff - mennolly's stories, but I tried some of the other dragonrider books. ultimately, though, I found them boring.
Agatha Christie: it was at this point that I read all the Christie i could get my furry little mitts on.
Chris Claremont: The New Mutants, at that point. I found New Mutants #1 in the corner store, and bought it. i went back every month to get the next issue.
Lois Duncan: I can'teven remember the titles of these books, but i know i read them. kinda gothic horror suspense stories for young girls.
Tried and dropped: McCaffery and Duncan. I didn't so much Drop christie as much as I'd read all her stuff and there wasn't any more because she was dead.
Tried and kept: My affair with Claremont was not yet over. I discovered the comic book store, and keeping a file, and as it turned out, the person I was sharing a file with turned out to be a longtime X-men reader. L'Engle's books ended up on my re-read list.
Five Authors I Read -- High School
Anne Rice: yeah, i know. but the vampire series was JUST like a Meatloaf Song(1) and I was at the perfect age to adore the angstfest that was Louis and Lestat. (hated Queen of the Damned, though.) I still admire Interview with the Vampire.
Tanith Lee: It was here that I found Azhrarn the beautiful and the Tales of the Flat Earth. I have a darned near obsessive Tanith lee Collection. if I don't have a copy of The BirthGrave, I get hives.
Gael Baudino: High school was when Thomas Canty covers dominated, and I couldn't resist those books. the first one I ever bought, though, was Strands of Sunlight, and the glomming continued for a few years.
(Ed.) Terri Windling, The Fairy Tale series: Canty made me do it, but what a damn bonus it was. Tam Lin, Snow White, Rose Red, The Sun, The Moon, and the Stars... consider the abiding love of fairy tales from childhood. this series was a natural for me.
Charles de Lint: This is a spinoff from the Fairy Tale series, of course - I read Jack, The Giant-killer, and kept on going. A couple of years ago, someone (
tanaise, I think) was talking about friends and referred to their residence as Tamsin house. I damn near choked on my drink in my haste to ask if there reallyreally was a Tamsin house. Alas!
Tried and dropped: David eddings. I read the first series, the belgariad, quickly. and then I started reading the next one, and realized that it was the same story. dropped this writer like a hot rock. it was somewhere in here that I decided that The X-men wasn't all it could be, and quit with the superhero comics. Also, Stephen King.
Tried and kept: Barbara Hambly. I read the Sun Wolf series at this point, and liked it enough to keep going, though slowly.
Past high School:
mercedes Lackey. Valdemar, my secret guilty pleasure of the 90's, ahhhh. couldn't get enough of the Oh, shoot me now uniforms and the my little pony companions...(cough)
John Varley. Someone handed me Titan and i've been a hard fan ever since. I'm waiting for mammoth to come out in paperback, and I can't wait. can't WAIT! dont' tell me what happens!
Neil Gaiman: Sandman, specifically. I sat down with every single issue of sandman and read them one by one in a huge binge. loved them.
Spider Robinson: sure, Callahan's, but the mindkiller series is interesting. also, see his short fiction.
Steven Brust: he's probably my favorite writer, you know. I read and re-read the Vlad Taltos books. Dzur should be coming out soon. I can't wait for it to come out in paperback. Don't tell me what happens!
Tried and dropped: Robert Jordan. god, I dont' CARE about the wheel of overtime anymore. i'll just get furiously angry like I did with Winter's heart, and I knew before I read it that it was going to suck. I just didn't realize how bad.
Tried and kept: Ellen Kushner. Please write more. pretty please? Also, holly lisle.
Five Authors I Read -- Present Day
Robert Charles Wilson: I'm so glad I got turned on to this guy. I really like these books. I'm waiting for spin to come out in paperback so I can read it. dont' tell me what happens!
Peter Watts: I've bullied just about every SF reader I know to read this guy. He's really, really good. what, you haven't read him yet? Go get Starfish. go. I'll wait here. I'm waiting for Behemoth to come out in paperback so I can read it. Don't tell me what happens!
Elizabeth Bear: A' course. and not just because I love the woman and knit her stuff. I'm waiting for Blood and Iron to come out, so I can read it in the bathtub this time. I promise I won't tell you what happens, but if you're not on this list already you should go friend
elaine_andraste and read the back entries. Go. Run. it will only whet your appetite for more.
James Alan Gardner: I love the Explorer books. I do. yes, they're SF adventures, but what-evah. they're great. I love them with an irrational loff.
Tried and dropped: Anne Bishop, Jaqueline Carey
Tried and kept: Pauline Gedge, Sara Paretsky, Lois mcMaster Bujold, J.K. Rowling (Snape Rules), Lynn Flewelling (finish the Tamar books, dammit!), Naomi Kritzer, Emma Bull
