cpolk: yes. Those really are my hands. (hands)
http://listen.grooveshark.com/#/s/Swinging+on+the+Cusp/Ge3y4

also today while i was tidying up i had an idea for a thing. I have a lot of yarn in my stash, yarn i purchased for projects that wound up being too much for me or because i didn't really know what the yarn wanted to be, or whatever, and i usually talk about knitting only when a project is going well.

But i knit every day.

so maybe I should talk about the days where things aren't going superfantastic as well as the days where i figured out this technical thing and aren't I a smartypants? because i don't knit so much as i blunder and frog, and only presenting when i'm doing well maybe makes an illusion that i'm captain awesomepants knitter and that in order to be a knitter, you have to be great at it.

hahaha. I read this definition not too long ago: A cyclist is someone who cycles, even when they don't have to.

So maybe a knitter is someone who knits, even when they wind up frogging it anyway.

and that's ME, Herc! That's ME!

So i took a couple quick pictures: )

I have GUI! and all it took was a re-install. I haven't checked to see if I have connectivity yet - I was about to, and then Wolf fired up the vacuum so we had to shut down all extraneous electricity because of load. the lights flickered. I'm not kidding.

(later)

okay, so GUI=yes. internets? no.

okay, keep trying.

xubuntu has a word processor built in. once I get internets going, basically what I want it to do is write, web, music, chat, and the capability of using skype/webcam - not that I expect the laptop to be able to do the latter, but it has to be able to do it on my desktop.

oh and image editing. mustn't forget image editing.

I don't think that's beyond xubuntu's capability.

not a single stitch on Durrow. Yet. But it's early yet. I may not get a full pattern repeat in, but I'll get some done now that I'm done messing with linux for today.

After raving about Minstrel in the Gallery, I was then enabled with another track from that album, The Baker Street Muse. Well, Peter recced it, and Bear sent it. She also managed to send the beginnings of a more recent album, J-tull.com.

So even more music to enjoy. Hurray!

so I have a doorstop to test out xubuntu, which is likely to be the Os I will use on Homonculus once I figure it out.

but I went for the 6.06 alternate install, because of the limited memory capabilities on Golem (she's a compaq presario 1200, be nice) and apparently something is screwed up, as when I re-booted I got me errors:

SMBus controller not enabled! - upgrade BIOS or use force=1

via 686a 0000:00:07.4 base address not set - upgrade BIOS or use force_0xaddr

okay cool, obviously I've got to get into the BIOS and adjust that. but yo. HOW?

so anybody who can point me to "installing Linux for the confused and wandering" can consider themselves the recipient of big squishy hugs.

The yarn diet continues apace, which means I got work done on durrow.

Well that i did, as I finished knitting a sleeve today. though I fear it's actually too short - I just thought that if I went for one more repeat it would be too long.

I might just rip it back and throw in one more repeat and let it be too long. because waif-like in the sweater is better than bony wrists sticking out, I am sure.

Lately I have been listening to Jethro Tull. I'm not terribly familiar, and I've asked people in the past to enable me, well I've been doing a bit of my own enabling - and I've got a pretty decent list to select from so far.

First of all, I'm surprised by how many Tull songs I actually know - but hey, I was alive during the 70's. I shouldn't be all that surprised. It's a real kick to hear a song and think "wait, I know this."

Anyway, this song was a previously unheard one, and I have all kinds of love for it off the first listen. (you there - you who does not get prog rock - beat it, heathen. This ain't for you. I will give you some love later.) I exclaimed in surprise in aim:

[22:08] [livejournal.com profile] cpolk: ok
[22:08] [livejournal.com profile] cpolk: Minstrel in the Gallery?
[22:08] [livejournal.com profile] cpolk: has cowbell.
[22:08] [livejournal.com profile] cpolk: it wins.
[22:08] [livejournal.com profile] stillnotbored: lol
[22:09] [livejournal.com profile] katallen: heh
[22:10] [livejournal.com profile] cpolk: I just want to lie down in a dark room that smells of sandalwood and patchouli and smoke a HUGE joint while listening to this song.
[22:10] [livejournal.com profile] cpolk: it is. SO 70's.
[22:12] [livejournal.com profile] cristalia: heeeeeee
[22:13] [livejournal.com profile] cpolk: that was 8 minutes and 14 seconds of awesome.

yow I need this whole album right now
cpolk: (better future)
There could be happier, but I've only got three days to find out what it is

so. can you ante and raise on the 29 person Swedish band "I'm From Barcelona" singing Treehouse?

come on. I used to live in a Tree house. it was like the best pad EVER. just look at it. that's mountains of cool.

Rob is so damn cool. here's my free will horoscope for this week:

"Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one’s self-esteem," wrote psychiatrist Thomas Szasz. "That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily; and why older persons, especially if vain or important, cannot learn at all." I hope this observation is a sufficiently gentle preparation for your assignment, Libra. Are you ready to make the entire world your classroom, to expand your capacity to be taught, and to master a slew of new tricks? I hope so. To pull it off, you must be willing to let your ego die.

that's like guru on the mountain wisdom for me right now, and Rob is my Short Duration Personal Saviour for today.

and OMG stuffed Elephant must get to IKEA NOW

and I have missed many days on my mp3 advent calendar, so to catch up:

Pretend this was December 5
A.C. Newman - Most of Us Prizefighters

And this was December 6
Devo - Snowball

It was December 7 when I started uploading
B- 52's - Dance this Mess Around

and for December 8th:

The Pogues - Fairytale of New York
Oh look, a christmas song. Festive.

and WHOO! My darling [livejournal.com profile] legacyofty is coming to town for new years! so damn awesome. I'm looking forward to hanging out! maybe we can take bob for a walk for nostalgia's sake....
cpolk: (Default)
This one is the super duper top end of happy I dare you not to chairdance!

The English Beat - Ranking Full Stop
cpolk: (Default)
Sloan - Who Loves Life More

and that's all I've got for you. it's stupidly cold, I love my new mp3 player, it is the best christmas gift I've had in years.
cpolk: (Default)
Those of you who remember The Great Santa Hat Project know that I take christmas seriously around here. Yep. I've even noticed some of you no my f-list hauling out the santahatted icons I made for that and that's like being given a gift in return. *warm fuzzies*

So, advent calendars around my place were of the chocolate box variety: starting on December 1st and every day until chistmas, you got to open a little section on your box and eat a chocolate. it is with that spirit I bring to you:

Totally Fuckin' Festive Holiday Season Tunes!

And this is almost as christmassy as I get with my music. I will get more christmassy, I promise. but not much. However, I've been planning to use this song as December 1st ever since I came up with the idea--it's the perfect song to get this fun started.

nomeansno - Joy

Yes. I am a fan. And you should be too. so there. Play it loud and frantic.
cpolk: (Default)
Will only have a direct meaning for the people who got the torture scene

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds - Idiot Prayer

But this song IS in my mp3 mix for November. So.
cpolk: (Default)
this might be a track that should have sunk into mid 80's obscurity...

except I have it in my collection. Mwa ha ha ha!

Belfegore - All That I Wanted

I knew this song but i didn't know what it was called. I remember hearing it in the mid 80's when I sneaked into Luv-A-Fair in Vancouver. I actually got the track from someone here on LJ who was going to Luv-A-Fair at the same time, but either could sneak in more regularly or was of age at the time. me, I was 16.

And sneaking in. Gad, that's what my Harry/Draco slash is about. HAHAHAHAHAHA

Oh and I'm gonna give you another one, because I am filled with the generous and the evil.

Bigod20 - Like a Prayer
cpolk: (I am not young enough to know everything)
[livejournal.com profile] timprov had mentioned that he bought Twin Cinema, the most recent New Pornographers album after hearing the tracks that I shared. and he mentioned that suddenly it becomes Spinal Tap.

I think The Jessica Numbers is the song he was referring to. I can just see the mini stonehenge and the dancing dwarves...
cpolk: (Default)
All tracks stayed in as planned. I did as much as I could with my meager and pitiful tarck mixing - aligning skills is soundforge and sonic foundry CD maker.

a werd of caution - there are places where I crossfaded. this won't be a super rippable cd. if there is a track you want once you've burned, let me know and I will up the mp3 for you.

So. heads up, [livejournal.com profile] heimshal! this is where I need you.

i have the cd setup as a .cdp file. I think this is proprietary.

What format do I need to convert this to in order to make it available to anyone with a burner, with whateva software they're burning with?

CD architect says it can save as Cd Architect image file (wav) - is that all I need to do?

i also have nero express, if that's helpful.
cpolk: (dance)

cpolk: (give to radiskull)
Over the years I have searched for certain tracks to add to my mp3 collection, because they were important to me. because they represented certain moments in my life, or memories, or happinesses or unhappinesses.

ever since I knew what Mp3's were I'd been looking for Carmel - Bad Day. Little did I know just how obscure it was - I had the 12" single on vinyl. somehow this album never made it to CD. since it never made it to CD, the mp3 format would be damn near impossible to find.

Now, I might have the only mp3 in the world of this song. Well, until you download it, that is.

This song will always be about perching in the window that still had a working counterweight in number 13 at the Arlington with awful box wine, sobranie black russians, and singing this song out the windows once I'd had too much awful box wine. It's torchy, gospelly, bluesy and stayed in my heart for more than a decade without hearing it once. Now I can let rip any time I'm near my computer. where's my franzia?

I haven't been right on the screaming edge of music. The New Pornographers released Twin Cinemas weeks ago (and if you are in boston, they are playing in your town either today or tomorrow. Go. they're great.) I haven't run away to the record store to pick up the CD, but from the mp3s I stumbled over (I swear, ma, they followed me home) I must run not walk to the record store and get this album and listen to it over and over and over just like I did with the other two. I've got three tracks and I'm eager to hear this in proper listening order.

Get a load of this:

Use It - Did you like that Peanuts Cartoon soundtrack song, Linus and Lucy? I was reminded of that song in the percussive buildup of this one, with a left hand only piano line coupled with Kurt Dahle playing drums like he's beating them to death. it's a simple setup that occasionally breaks out in gleeful cacophany - I think this song is fun, but maybe a bit... disorganized.

Twin Cinema - Fuck, I'm grabbed by this seesaw sound and gently dissonant crunchy walking guitar line right off the hop. this song is bright and cheerful, with everything that's happy and wholesome about rock and roll polishing up a tune that has to have electric stage presence. It's also an irresistible chairdancing song. So far this one is my favorite, but I must hear the rest of the album to know for sure.

Jackie, Dressed in Cobras - A.C. Newman, Neko Case, and Dan Bejar are all "lead singers" for NP. and they exploit this abundance of golden throats with three part vocals to go overtop of the strangely flavored with new wave if new wave had a wall of sound that reminded you of Zumpano.

For Sosostris2012 - Here Is Juno Reactor - God Is God. I hope it's the right one.

Damn you, [livejournal.com profile] scottlynch. damn you all to heack.

I'm sitting in the den wrapped in a Hudson's Bay Blanket, waving one arm around (with a pen in hand) like I'm conducting an orchestra that consists of a guitar and a banjo, singing, "It's a big ad! Very Big Ad! It's just so Freaking huge!"
cpolk: (pretty)
Soooo. you ever wonder what kind of updo/bun hairstyle you could do on your past shoulder length to near waist length hair with two pony tail holders, six hair pins and less than ten minutes?

86 K worth of pitchers! )

how I did it, the short version:

I made a ponytail, then twisted up a 2 strand rope braid, fastened the end, wound it in a bun, tucking the ends under and pinning in place. I used hairpins, but bobby pins will do if there are no hairpins.

That glossiness? a glossing of Ultimate Hair and Skin Butter. bun updos are a great way to wear a long term oil treatment - nobody can tell your hair is *oily* and the oils make your hair gloss nicely. Plus you've got the ends tucked under and protected. bun updos are *good.*

oh, and yet more LOVE! Kate Bush - King of the Mountain. Yes, this is new. scoop it, darlings.

1. Find the top 100 songs from the year you graduated from high school.
2. Cut and paste them into your journal.
3. Bold the ones you like(d).
4. Underline your favorite.
5. Strike through the songs you loathe.
6. Italicize the songs you're pretty sure you've never heard.

Who the hell ARE these people? was I living under a rock? who are these bands? what are these songs? What was I listening to in high school because it wasn't this stuff. )

I killed my radio in 1984.

that's probably why I don't have a clue what these songs are. the music I was listening to had nothing to do with billboards top hits of whatever.

What WAS I listening to in 1987?

oh yeah.
cpolk: (UmbrellaKiss)
The person (or persons) who passed the baton to you:

argh! [livejournal.com profile] pnew8 got me!

Total volume of music files on your computer:

1969 songs, 5 days, 23 hours, 2 minutes, 46 seconds, 9.09 GB

--This number isn't completel accurate. I have some albums wrapped up in an archive

The title and artist of the last CD you bought:

The New Pornographers - The Electric Version

Song playing at the moment of writing:

The Breeders - Too Alive

Five songs you have been listening to of late (or all-time favorites, or particularly personally meaningful songs):

I don't listen to my mp3s that way, really. I generally load my whole playlist, hit random, and come back in a bit under a week. So let's do it like this:

The Tragically Hip - Ahead by a Century
(Or sit silently and listen to our thoughts...With illusions of someday cast in golden light)

Jefferson Airplane - Lather
(And I should have told him, "No, you're not old," and I should have let him go ...)

War - Spill The Wine
(...This really blew my mind: The fact that me--an overfed long haired leaping gnome--should be the star of a hollywood movie)

Police - Man in a Suitcase
(It looks like home to me alright--But it's a hundred miles from yesterday night)

AC-DC - Back in Black
(Forget the hearse 'cause I never die! I got nine lives, cat's eyes; abusin' every one of them and running wild)
cpolk: yes. Those really are my hands. (hands)
because it will earworm you.

O-Zone - Dragostea Din Tei

this is what I like to call the Numa Numa song.

Dance, Dance!
