Seven things I'm not quite willing to promise to leave out, even though I possibly should:

1. Elves, because even though I bitch and moan about them a lot, I love them so much arrrrgh.

2. paying attention to sartorial details whenever I can get away with it in that particular POV. clothe make the man, you know. it's worth talking about.

3. Monarchies and Empires. because dude, maybe restoring the rightful king is an enamel grinding plot device, but being King? is cool. even if you're just a peculiar sort of celebrity because you're the head of a constitutional monarchy...

4. Love triangles. jeepers, people, boy meets girl is done to death, and Love triangles have their fair share of rips and tears, but the sheer combinations of conflict and attraction alone are enough to set up PAGES of character building goodness.

5. describing trees and bugs and bugs and trees and water. otherwise, how would anyone know I wrote it?

6. Dances, parties, feasts, and meetings.

7. the social structure of magic using peoples.

17. Just how the hell have you been doing?

Basically all right. I haven't really been doing anything exciting to fill my time, though. We must go to a place and drink it and eat it! I damn near fainted when I got the baby shower invite for Craig and Jen and then I wasn't near a computer right after that and thought it was supposed to be the 17th, not the 7th - and checked on the 12th to make sure. D'oh! I'm downtown form 9-3 monday to thursday for convenience, if you happen to be ranging around the area at that time....

18. What is your picture doing on www.craphound.com? that is some serious hard-ass blog-sphere boing-boing street credibility there.

You mean this one?

Peter, Chelsea, Leah Peter, Chelsea, Leah

That picture is from TorCon - the convention that hosted Worldcon in 2003. That picture was taken on the saturday night - I'm dressed for the Hugos, but ended up ditching the ceremony to drink beer with Peter Watts (the guy on theleft), [livejournal.com profile] matociquala, [livejournal.com profile] dlandon, and [livejournal.com profile] jim0052. After the Hugos were over we went back to the Fairmont Royal York and ran into [livejournal.com profile] cristalia - that's the hot babe on the right. We crashed the so very posh Ace Party, ran into Cory there, and he took our picture as part of his Worldcon report.

I'm Nitrogen! There, now you don't have to read the quiz. )

Yesterday, after many many disasters in trying to get ready and get the Hair under control, I ended up having a lovely, lovely dinner at La Tavola. We ate downstairs in the lounge, because we is smokers. he had a tomato and buffalo milk mozzarella bruschetta - lovely bread! and I could have asked for more mozzarella but that's because I am a fiend for cheese. Once we were done that, we got MORE bread - four different kinds! and a balsamic reduction, regular butter, a goat cheese mousse (which was so wonderful. I want to figure out how to make that so I can snack on it while I read.) and a butter mixed with herbs and spices. it was actually sweet, and i have no idea what was in it. I ate a chicken medallion stuffed with porcini mushrooms, some cool purple thing, and eggplant. quite hearty, and a subtle blend of flavour I appreciated (though the chicken was boneless, skinless, and a breast so I think that the exposed edge came out too dry for my taste. I would have done it with the skin on, or barring that wrapped in something protective to block that loss of moisture.)

I really wanted to have dessert, but we didn't have time. Laura took good care of us - she made me a smashing martini and then she gave us tasters of two very different and lovely italian wines (I really like italian wines) that would have gotten us roundly booed at cocktail night. but we had to get rolling if we were going to make the game tonight.

in the glare of the morning after, we should have gone for dessert.

Anyway, La Tavola. 210 513 8th ave s.w. Calgary, AB (403) 237-5787

You move into a completely empty house and start over from scratch-money is not a consideration. Write down twenty specifics for your ideal home from architectural features to furnishings that are "must haves" for you. They can range from a window seat in the upstairs hall to an English club chair with a tufted ottoman beside a fireplace.

From everywhere:

List five fictional characters you wanted to be when you were much younger.

1. Lucy Pevensie. That reminds me, I didn't reread the last book of that series. When I was young and only had The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Voyage of the Dawn treader, I used to daydream about Lucy. In my daydream she was a grandmother, and she promised her husband a few years before that they would be together again as he was on his deathbed. but then she was nearly on hers, and one morning she got up, found a granddaughter, said, "I was just the age you are now when I went on my grandest adventure," kissed her on the forhead, and went into that odd empty room that never really had much of anything in it.

But by the time the granddaughter wondered what on earth she was doing in there, she found the room empty, and the door to the wardrobe just slightly ajar...

2. Cap O' Rushes.

3. Azhrarn, Prince of Demons. Except a girl. but I would still be the Prince of Demons, because even to my young ears Princess sounded cutesy, frilly, and diminuitive.

4. Illyana Rasputin, Peter's little half demon sorceress teleporting sister. ohyeah!

5. Conan, the Barbarian. Except a girl. with the mightiest fuckin Thews EVAR, and the mad "if everyone's right and I'm stupid, how come I can speak your language three days after I got into town?" brainskillz.

Marianne -- The Romantic
You're Mariane Dashwood from Sense &
Sensibility
! You are the romantic
youngster, also found in Jane Austen's work as
Catherine of Northanger Abbey and
possibly Georgiana Darcy of Pride and
Prejudice
. You wander through life like Red
Riding Hood in the forest, picking wildflowers
and humming a happy song... and you can't see
the wolf right in front of you! Ruled by heart
and not by head, you are best advised to to
learn a little caution, before you are forced
into a better acquaintance with the ways of the
world.

Rantmaster [livejournal.com profile] nihilistic_kid has a very good post about how 20th century movies have infected popular fiction writing, here.

Also, though many of you have seen it, here's the mem heads up on Jan 27th:

January 27th is the birthday of Lewis Carroll, author of ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND. Alice fell down a rabbit hole into a place where everything had changed and none of the rules could be counted on to apply anymore. I say, let's do the same: January 27th, 2005 should be the First Annual LiveJournal Rabbit Hole Day. When you post on that Thursday, instead of the normal daily life and work and news and politics, write about the strange new world you have found yourself in for the day, with its strange new life and work and news and politics. Are your pets talking back at you now? Has your child suddenly grown to full adulthood? Does everyone at work think you're someone else now? Did Bush step down from the White House to become a pro-circuit tap-dancer? Did Zoroastrian missionaries show up on your doorstep with literature in 3-D? Have you been placed under house arrest by bizarre insectoid women wielding clubs made of lunchmeat?

Let's have a day where nobody's life makes sense anymore, where any random LJ you click on will bring you some strange new tale. Let's all fall down the Rabbit Hole for 24 hours and see what's there. It will be beautiful.

That's a meme I will get behind with all the enthusiasm of santahatting.

2. Badly edit a santa hat onto it.
3. Post for the delight and edification of others.
4. If I santahatted your icon, you absolutely can steal it back. that's part of the point.
