...And hot damn, I got me an idea for it. think novel, and sooner or later a short comes up.
I've got 1040 words so far, and they mostly stink, but writing it badly will help me figure out how to rewrite it better.
I've come up with good short stories from two sources for inspiration: the monthly OWW writing challenges, which i did sometimes, and the picture game, which got me my first science fiction short and my second science fiction short. My thrid SF short came from my job as a butterfly geek, and the fourth one, which I haven't finished, had its roots actually in the cover of a Science magazine that Peter had at a room party in Con-Version two years ago.
The cargo bay necromancers was actually a push for me to write an SF story idea I had back in 2002 but i couldn't find a story to go with the idea.
The Instant Muse Story Starter gave me some more wack to add in to try and get a story to come out. You remember The Instant Muse, don't you?
Well, it spat out this:
My main character/protagonist is a female.
My main character is a talent scout.
An archetype present in my story is Bloody Mary.
A key object or symbol in my story is a harp.
My story will be set in a carnival.
My story is about levity.
An event or situation in my story is an act of revenge.
the first three I can use, and provide some interesting angles. I tried the carnival angle, and it just made the story too "busy" for my liking (i tried setting it on The Golden Mean, a space resort I wrote about a few years back, and there was just too much going on.) The harp thing is a total gimmie for the story, but my story is definitely not about levity. this is me we're talking about. and revenge? well, that that fits the bill, don't it?
I should have a draft finished in time to put it up on the workshop in time for July 1. I'm really curious to see how the ideas coalesced for this one; we've never done a challenge like this before.
