This is not today; this is yesterday. Shh.
Jun. 9th, 2004 03:52 pmWords today: 370, and end of scene
Daily wordcount average: 535
Words in WIP so far: 24,250
Goal where I will have a mini celebration: Manuscript page 100
Okay, NOW it's today.
Today so far I've been writing background information, adding more stuff to my outline file, and figuring out what I need to research for world building. Topics include:
The technology of the printing press
The history of the Industrial Revolution
Societal changes that came about because of these two things
The history of the newspaper
Yeah, it ain't your typical fantasy novel. I've got a guy who is a retired thief with limited legal status who's trying to go (mostly) straight. His speciality in the wide world of thievery is forgery, but he has experience in second-story burglary. His "straight" job is as a merchant, dealing in secondhand goods and books - decorative vanity stuff, porcelain ware, furniture, jewellery, but a good deal of his business comes from selling unlicensed booze under the guise of a "tea house."
But it isn't all buy and sell - the city that he lives in is about to undergo an election that could change matters drastically, depending on who wins, and he's got a job that could be the equivalent of the "Big Score" - a magical artifact that could make him rich if he can manage to sell it without the law finding out he's got a very illegal piece of merchandise, because magic and all its trappings have been illegal, punishable by execution, for the last 600 years. On top of all that, his ties from his old life as a thief are tugging him into a situation he doesn't want to be in. It's not a quest story, it's a caper.
Anybody who's got some helpful tidbits on the research subjects and "Hey, did you think of--" are welcome to comment.
