What's the Hardest Part?
Dec. 7th, 2003 07:56 pmI don't know, all of it is hard. But really the hardest part is defeating the Little Voice.
You see, I'll get an idea, and I'll think about it for a bit, and then I'll start writing. and somewhere along the way, but usually after the first 1000 words if we're talking about a novelet, the Little Voice will pop up and start yammering about how terrible it is. Flat prose, paper cutout characters, stupid plot, ridiculous style, completely lacking in setting, narrative tension, pacing, or a reason to even exist.
And then I stop writing the damned thing.
I might go back and finish it. But then I have to contend with "No one is going to like this. You are going to fuck up the ending. You'll miss the point completely. Oh, that bit is just WAY too obvious. That's a terrible sentence. Does this scene have a point, by the way?"
It's exhausting.
