I would love it if you, oh my wondrous LJMind, would tell me about books that would fit this possibly made up subgenre description:

Steam and Sorcery.

why yes, it is connected with the snarkhistory of textile production in the industrial revolution...

Rob is so damn cool. here's my free will horoscope for this week:

"Every act of conscious learning requires the willingness to suffer an injury to one’s self-esteem," wrote psychiatrist Thomas Szasz. "That is why young children, before they are aware of their own self-importance, learn so easily; and why older persons, especially if vain or important, cannot learn at all." I hope this observation is a sufficiently gentle preparation for your assignment, Libra. Are you ready to make the entire world your classroom, to expand your capacity to be taught, and to master a slew of new tricks? I hope so. To pull it off, you must be willing to let your ego die.

that's like guru on the mountain wisdom for me right now, and Rob is my Short Duration Personal Saviour for today.

and OMG stuffed Elephant must get to IKEA NOW

Sea of Glass - Lemons and the sea. mmmm.

Kali - orange and chocolate and flowers. mmmm.

Urd - Urd made me yell, "I smell like a Head Shop!" It's awesome. well, actually it makes me smell like Orientique, a boutique that's long gone now that sold stuff from asia. the asia kick died out a bit in the 80's and 90's, but now it's back with a vengeance. I loved Orientique. I remember my friend Amanda wored there all through high school, and I'd buy my insense, my spiritual sky perfume oils, and my buffalo sandals from there. this is a get a 10mL of this one!

Dana O' Shee - I thought it would be too sweet, but instead it's wonderful!

Succubus - sharp and sweet, it smells like it would work on a man or a woman.
cpolk: yes. Those really are my hands. (hands)

daft scarf Bernat Glaxy colour lot "Deep Space"

I adore yarn like this. bulky, textured, fuzzy yarn. I crocheted this in an evening. It's two balls of yarn. I need at least one more and then I will have a scarf done.

So i'm on tap for three more scarves - [livejournal.com profile] drayce wants a long, wide scarf in black, I'm saying that she should go with an ultra bulky chenille velour fabric. [livejournal.com profile] strigoitemplar doesn't exactly know what yarn he wants, but I also picture a chenille for him--something he can tuck into the collar of his coat. [livejournal.com profile] uranyx told me I should surprise him.

hee hee hee hee hee.

but I like bulky because it crochets up FAST. all I did for this one is double chain stitch on a 6.5 hook, and every row added another inch to the length. I adore the daftness of this yarn - this one, deep space reminds me of all those impressive nebula pictures, but i'd also love to get my hands on a good supply of comet and earth in this fibre.

bernat also makes a wonderful chunky velour that I think would work well for the scarf drayce wants - drayce I checked it's bernat velour and you will need at least four balls of it even though it looks super huge and yes there is black!

...and I have no car. *sobs.* it used to be that I lived walking distance from IKEA, but now they've moved the store to way down in the south end, and I can't get there. I, who used to shop at IKEA once a month, have not even been to the new IKEA location.

What I need is a friend who can take me to IKEA and will either a) withstand a long, aimless wander looking at EVERY SINGLE THING in the store and buy things with me, and take a break in the cafeteria, or b) will drive me to IKEA and pick me up when I am done after I call them on their cell.

Any takers? Hell if there are a lot of you we can go in a gang.

And now it's Time to dust off the oracle. Gain some perspective. Become utterly confused. )
...When I consult an oracle, it's because my intuition, which is usually pretty good, is completely frazzled and confused. so a card that says "trust your intuition" generally is not helpful.

I suppose you're wondering what that's all about.

I had the most peculiar sensation while I was making the corset. I wasn't sewing in my livingroom. I wasn't using my teeny, ancient old Elna set up on a wooden TV table with my ancient ironing board next to me.

I couldn't shake the feeling that I was in a large room with a very high ceiling and clerestory windows. That the corset I was sewing wasn't for me, but for an upcoming production in a play. That I was at work, and that I'd worked in this place for a long time, and I was content working in this place. That I might get a bit of a gig here and there doing costuming for TV, but mostly it was theatre, and that while it wasn't a 9 to 5 job per se I wasn't starving and I had a spring steel budget of my own, thanks so much.

And then that would recede, a bit, but it wouldn't go away completely. And it was a good feeling. It felt really good.

And then I just found out a couple days ago that The Alberta College of Art and Design has a faculty of fibre arts. So far, that's all I've found in town here that has anything remotely to do with a post secondary education that has anything to do with sewing clothes. Well, maybe the university of Calgary still has a faculty of Home Economics or something. I haven't really looked because I don't know where to look.

But that's CRAZY. I can't do a four year fibre arts program. That's an impossible dream. Tuition alone is five thousand dollars a year. I've had yearly incomes that weren't much more than that. That doesn't include supplies or books or food or lodging. I'd never be able to do it the money is just unattainable how would I LIVE, but I can't stop thinking about it.

Ohmigod. Art college. I'm so shin-kickingly JEALOUS of people who are chasing or have chased BFAs. (I kick your shins. and yours. and yours. and yours too, dammit. And a great big fookin' kick all the way to Stockholm, Sweden.) But I can't do that, it'll never happen.

Actually a lot of good things are happening to me just now. a lot of opportunities opening, potentials blossoming...between that and the weather it feels like spring is coming really early. Good things that I really don't know how on earth it happened. Things that a month ago didn't even occur to me as possibilities.
